Occupational disease

Occupational diseases are illnesses recognised by the insurance provider that individuals suffer as a result of their professional activities. Certain conditions must be met for this to apply. The illness and the occupation causing it must be defined as an occupational disease in the German government's list of occupational diseases. Illnesses that are not listed there may be recognised as quasi-occupational diseases in exceptional cases. The accident insurance provider is responsible for recognising occupational diseases. For patients, diagnosed occupational diseases primarily mean more benefits that would otherwise not be covered by insurance. Depending on the job description, occupational diseases can include respiratory diseases, skin diseases, hearing loss or cancer. Many spinal disorders are also included, with herniated discs often being diagnosed and recognised as occupational diseases.

Spinal disorders as occupational diseases

Back problems are not uncommon, even in the world of occupational diseases. Occupational groups that have to lift heavy loads or drive vehicles that vibrate strongly in the course of their work often suffer from work-related spinal disorders. Of all spinal disorders that are recognised as occupational diseases, herniated discs are the most common diagnosis. Herniated discs as an occupational disease occur particularly frequently in the construction industry, in nursing, among farmers, and among porters. The lumbar spine, the lower part of the spine, can be particularly affected by prolonged or incorrect strain.

The intervertebral discs are cushions that lie between the individual vertebrae and act as shock absorbers during movement. In a herniated disc, a gel-like mass leaks from the nucleus of the disc and presses on the nerves in the spinal canal. The local pain can radiate to the surrounding tissues. Stress can promote age-related wear and tear of the discs, which is why herniated discs are so common as an occupational disease.

Whether it is an occupational disease or not, a herniated disc can cause severe pain and should be diagnosed and treated by a specialist. If you have severe back pain or suspect a herniated disc, the doctors at the Avicenna Clinic are there to provide you with competent and empathetic support.
